It is noticeable to say that a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court on May 26 said there have been "Inadequacies and certain lapses" on the part of the Central and State governments in dealing with the migrant workers crisis during the lockdown. Newspaper reports and other media reports have been continuously showing the unfortunate and miserable conditions of migrant workers walking on the foot and cycling for the long distance", the Court stated. Adding "Effective concentrated efforts were required to redeem the situation". So I suppose that, although, SC's this step is late, but is better, because lakhs of people are forced on the roads and footpaths to walk on the foot, no one is ready to help them except some people. Dear Editor,It is good dicision that looking at the unfortunate and miserable conditions of migrant labourers walking on-foot and cycles from long ditances, a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court took note of "problems and miseries" of labourers stranded by the coronavirus lockdown. Taking up the case, addressing to the Centre and the states the top court ordered to immediately provide transport, food and shelter free of cost to the stranded migrant workers. Because of their complaining of not being provided food and water by administration at places where they were stranded, they have been asked to report to it on "steps taken to redeem the miseries" of migrant labourers within 48 hours or by Thursday. I appriciate the Supreme Court that in this difficult situation of lockdown, this is carried weight dicision for the stranded mirgant workers. NEW DELHI, May 27: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought response from the Union Home Ministry in four weeks on fixing a time limit for processing and placing before the President a mercy petition by a death row convict seeking clemency.Making it clear that the Court can’t ask the President to decide a mercy petition in a time-frame, a bench comprising Chief Justice Sharad A. Bobde, and Justices A.S. Bopanna and Hrishikesh Roy said the only thing that they can do is to ask the Ministry of Home Affairs on the lime limit in placing the file before the President.Chief Justice Bobde said, “Only thing we felt important was time limit and even for that we can't direct the President” and “only thing we may consider is directing MHA on time limit for placing it (mercy petition) before the President.”The Court asked the MHA if there is a timeline for it to put the mercy petition before the President. 48 lakh migrants reach home by 'Shramik' special trains

NEW DELHI, May 27: Around 48 lakh stranded migrant labourers and others have reached their home states through 3543 "Shramik" special trains started on May 1, 255 of which originated only on Tuesday. They, however, constitute only 10% of around 4-5 crore migrant labourers stranded in various states without jobs because of the shutdown in the wake of the coronavirus-induced Lockdowns.All of them were distributed more than 78 lakh free meals and more than 1.10 crore water bottles, the Railways said on Wednesday.In addition to Shramik specials, Railways are running 15 pairs of special fully air-conditioned trains connecting New Delhi from May 12 and plans to start 200 more time tabled trains on June 1.Top five States from where maximum trains originated are Gujarat (946 Trains), Maharashtra (677 Trains), Punjab (377 Trains), Uttar Pradesh (243 Trains) and Bihar (215 Trains). NEW DELHI, May 27: The compulsory hotel quarantine period for Indians, returning from abroad, has been reduced from 14 days to 7 days vide the revised guidelines of the health ministry for the international arrivals. The quarantine of 7 days is to b followed by 7 days of home quarantine after the medical assessment.In a circular sent Tuesday night to the state chief secretaries, Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said many hotels had forced the returnees to pay advance for 14 days. India's recovery rate improves, very low death rate

NEW DELHI, May 27: India's recovery rate compared to total as 1.518 lakh tested positive improved further to 42.44 on Wednesday with 3934 more COVID-19 patients cured and out of hospital, raising the total recoveries to 64,425. In terms of 32.42 lakh tested so far, the recovery rate is 1.98% as against the death rate of 0.13%.There was a substantial increase of some 32,000 more tested in a single day raising the total tested in a day to 1.16 lakh as against 92,528 a day earlier. There were 170 deaths in the past 24 hours, raising the total COVID-19 deaths in the country to 4337 which is 2.85% of those tested positive and just 0.13% of the total persons tested so far.Maharashtra topped with 54758 tested positive and 1792 deaths as against 16954 recoveries while Tamil Nadu came second in terms of 17728 confirmed positive cases, though with comparative lesser deaths of 127. Gujarat has the second highest 915 deaths. It came third in terms of 14821 tested positive. Delhi follows with 14465 positives and 288 deaths.…

 Organiser had reported how a Assam based TV channel had forced Guwahati based journalist Ranjita Rabha to resign after she became pregnant as the channel refused to shift her to news desk.  Prag News, the city based satellite news channel came under fire from various media rights bodies and social organisations over its action. The channel authority had bluntly declared that it has no provision for maternity leave for women workers. After the news went viral, the National Commission for Women has issued a notice to the said channel. The NCW notice states that the attitude of the channel exposes the double standards of the organisation towards pregnant employees. The NCW condemned the insensitive attitude of the channel towards the employee and said that the commission is deeply perturbed by the violation of provisions of the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. The NCW has aksed the channel to send its response to the notice at the earliest.

Kenyans abroad are sending a lot less money back home Like many low- and middle-income countries, remittances — which are basically funds sent home by nationals living/working abroad — play a significant role in supporting families, improving living standards, and generally bolstering the local economy. But remittances have nosedived since COVID-19 went from outbreak to pandemic, and in Kenya where funds repatriated from abroad are the biggest source of foreign currency, things may be going very south. Data from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) indicates that the country’s biggest source of foreign capital inflows is shrinking. Last month, Kenyans living outside the country sent home all of USD 208 Mn, some 9 percent less than the amount sent home in March. The dip in remittances is not unconnected to the shocks caused by the global pandemic and the situation might yet worsen.
