Minnesota police arrest CNN's Omar Jimenez and his camera crew on live TV

As dawn broke Friday on Minneapolis, Minnesota State Patrol officers in riot gear had managed to clear the area around the Minneapolis Police Department's 3rd Precinct station, breached and set ablaze Thursday night amid protests against the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man in police custody. But that's not the story anymore. CNN's Omar Jimenez was reporting on the new calm in the area when the police came up and arrested him, handcuffed him, and led him away. They did not give a reason. The cameras were broadcasting live to CNN's New Day. "That is an American television reporter, Omar Jimenez, being led away by police officers," marveled New Day's John Berman. Then police arrested the rest of the crew, one by one, with the camera rolling. Twitter hides Trump tweet for 'glorifying violence'

SAN FRANCISCO - Twitter has hidden a tweet by President Donald Trump from his profile, saying it violates rules about glorifying violence. It did the same hours later when the official White House account tweeted a copy of the president's words. Instead of being deleted, both tweets can be viewed by clicking on a prominent warning. It says that "Twitter has determined that it may be in the public's interest for the Tweet to remain accessible." This is the latest twist in an escalating row between Twitter and the White House. The US president finds himself in unexpected company alongside other world leaders whose tweets have been censored. In February 2019, Twitter had a tweet by Iranian Leader Supreme Ayatollah Ali Khamenei removed after it appeared to threaten author Salman Rushdie. Also last year, several accounts associated with Cuban President Raul Castro and members of his government were suspended, citing policy violations. Trump was tweeting about the US city of Minneapolis, which has seen consecutive…

Trump's social media executive order could force social media to censor Trump

There are a lot of legal, ethical, political, and constitutional questions about the executive order President Trump signed Thursday purporting to "defend free speech" by regulating social media companies. But there's also a practical one: Is Trump shooting himself in the foot? Trump's executive order targets Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, a foundational internet law that shields websites like social media companies from liability for most things users post to their sites. If Trump is successful, Twitter, Google, and Facebook "could face legal jeopardy if they allowed false and defamatory posts," Peter Baker and Daisuke Wakabayashi explain at The New York Times. "Without a liability shield, they presumably would have to be more aggressive about policing messages that press the boundaries — like the president's." "Ironically, Donald Trump is a big beneficiary of Section 230," said Kate Ruane at the American Civil Liberties Union. "If platforms were not immune under the law, then they would…

The White House has called on the FCC to regulate whether social media are liable for content posted on their platforms. Pubs with beer gardens likely to be first to reopen when restrictions eased

Pubs with beer gardens are likely to be among the first venues in the hospitality sector to reopen when coronavirus restrictions are eased, the Environment Secretary has confirmed. George Eustice said there would be no changes until “at least” July when he expected pubs and restaurants with outdoor areas would be the only ones able to welcome customers again. Pubs, restaurants, theatres, clubs and cinemas have been closed for more than two months after the Prime Minister announced last orders on March 20.

Queen’s letters over Australian PM’s dismissal should be public, court rules

Correspondence exchanged between the Queen and her representative in Australia in the lead up to the country’s only dismissal of a former prime minister can be made public, a court has ruled. The Australian High Court overturned an earlier decision relating to the cache of letters which have been sealed in the National Archives.Governor-General Sir John Kerr dismissed Labour prime minister Gough Whitlam in 1975 and replaced him with opposition leader Malcolm Fraser in one of the most controversial moments in the country’s political history. The letters, deemed “personal and confidential correspondence”, were deposited into the National Archives of Australia and were intended to remain private until at least December 2027.The private secretary of the Governor-General and Monarch at that time could also limit their release under an agreement, court papers said.
